The New Jersey State Bar Foundation is providing grant funding to eight New Jersey-based nonprofit organizations to fund summer law associates. This program provides an opportunity for law students to serve the public in the nonprofit community and develop advocacy and other legal skills. The associates will work for a host nonprofit organization this summer.

The work and projects to be performed by the summer associates includes working with the nonprofit’s attorneys to prepare cases, creating community educational materials, working with youth who face discrimination in housing, and providing representation to victims of domestic violence and age discrimination.

“We are grateful to the New Jersey State Bar Foundation for funding a paid summer associate in our domestic violence division, Rachel Coalition,” said Diane K. Squadron, CEO of Jewish Family Service of MetroWest New Jersey. “These funds will allow for increased legal support to victims of domestic violence, as well as much needed education and training about domestic violence law for future attorneys.”

Gwen Orlowski, Executive Director of Disability Rights New Jersey said, “The New Jersey State Bar Foundation’s grant funding allows us to offer an additional law student the opportunity to consider public interest as a career. Our new summer associate will help Disability Rights NJ expand our youth justice work, which focuses on decriminalizing youth in underserved community through legal representation and education.”

Grant funding from the New Jersey State Bar Foundation gives nonprofit organizations opportunities to engage law students who are passionate about public service.

“This is a great way to combine professional development and hands-on learning for students to gain real-world experience in making a difference for the community,” NJSBF President Charlie Stoia said.

The nonprofit organizations that have received funding for summer associates include:

  • American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey
  • Community Health Law Project
  • Covenant House New Jersey
  • Disability Rights New Jersey
  • Jewish Family Service of MetroWest New Jersey
  • Make the Road New Jersey
  • SPAN Parent Advocacy Network
  • Volunteer Lawyers for Justice

The NJSBF Summer Associate grant program is made possible through funding from the IOLTA Fund of the Bar of New Jersey. More about the New Jersey State Bar Foundation’s grants and cosponsorships can be found at cosponsor.njsbf.org.
